A-Level Health and Social Care
By studying Health and Social Care, you will develop knowledge and understanding of issues that affect the health, early years, care and education sector. This course will also help you to prepare for further training or study in one of these sectors.
A-Level Health and Social Care
A specific arrangement of units is required for certification, made up of two AS-Level units and three A2 level units. You will study four units and the assessment for A-Level Health and Social Care is by exam and coursework. The AS-Level and A-Level Health and Social Care are also available as Double Awards. This means that you have the opportunity to study two additional units (AS and or/A2) to receive the Double Award (equivalent of two AS-Levels and/or two A-Levels).
Over the course, you will undergo at least 360 guided learning hours over a two-year period (For the A-Level Double Award this will be 720 hours). These guided learning hours are levels set by the government on how much time the tutor at your sixth form or college has to be present to give guidance (such as lectures, tutorials etc.) towards your award.
AS-Level Health and Social Care
- AQA AS-Level Health and Social Care
You will study an Effective Care and Communication unit, which will introduce you to the skills used in health, social care and other community settings. You also have the opportunity to study an optional module, such as Understanding Health Conditions and Patient Care Pathways, Life as a Challenge, Educating Children and Young People or Learning and Development. This AS-Level award is also available as an AS-Level Double Award.
- WJEC AS-Level Health and Social Care
The Promoting Quality Care and Communication unit is compulsory. In this, you will learn about the factors that affect quality of life as well as developing knowledge of principles in health and social care. The Promoting Good Health unit is also compulsory and you will learn about the factors that influence health and well-being and how government initiatives promote good health.
For those who wish to study for the AS-Level Double Award, units available include Child Development: Principles and Theories of Growth and Development (0-8 years), Creative Activities in a Range of Care Settings, Understanding Individuals with Disabilities or Understanding Common Illnesses, Diseases and Disorders.
- OCR AS-Level Health and Social Care
In Promoting Quality Care, you will learn about attitudes and prejudices, rights and responsibilities of service providers and service users and quality care. In the Communication in Care Settings unit, you will learn about communication, including types of and skills in. In Promoting Good Health, you will explore the principles of health and well-being and health promotion. This AS-Level award is also available as an AS-Level Double Award.
A2-Level Health and Social Care
The A2 Health and Social Care is the equivalent of the second year of study of A-Level Health and Social Care. This is not a separate award. The A2 –Level Health and Social Care with the AS-Level Health and Social Care makes up the A-Level Health and Social Care. The A2-Level Health and Social Care will further develop your knowledge from AS-Level Health and Social Care.
- AQA A2 Health and Social Care
In the compulsory unit, Practitioner Roles, you will develop your understanding of work in the sector and you will be able to reflect on your own suitability for different types of roles. You are then able to select one of the following optional units for study, Food and Fitness, Using and Understanding Research, Understanding Mental Disorders or Diagnosis, Treatment and Preventative Strategies.
- WJEC A2 Health and Social Care
In Provision of Health, Social Care and Children’s Services you will study a variety of services to meet individual needs and in Understanding Human Behaviour, you will learn about what affects human development as well as the concepts and theories that explain human behaviour in different care settings.
For the A-Level Double Award, you can study two of the following options: Working in Health and Social Care, Care for Older Individuals, The Role of Complementary Therapies in the Care of Individuals or The Influences of Food and Fitness on Health.
- OCR A2 Health and Social Care
In the Care Practice and Provision unit, you will learn about national policy, legislation and provision of services. You will also develop an understanding of quality assurance. In Understanding Human Behaviour and Development, you will learn about theories to explain behaviour and development.
You have the opportunity to either study Anatomy and Physiology in Practice, which covers the main body systems and those affected by health and lifestyle choices, or Child Development. In this unit, you will learn about the norms of development and what influences development. This A-Level award is also available as an A-Level Double Award.
