A-Level Design & Technology – Textiles
By choosing to study A Level Design & Technology or any of the available routes, you will develop a broad view of design and technology. You will also develop your ability to design, make and evaluate products as well as being able to appreciate design, materials, manufacture and marketing and the importance of links between these.
A-level Design & Technology – Textiles
A specific arrangement of units is required for certification, made up of two AS-Level units and two A2 level units. You will study four units and the assessment for A-Level Design & Technology – Textiles is by portfolio and exam.
Over the course, you will undergo at least 360 guided learning hours over a two-year period. These guided learning hours are levels set by the government on how much time the tutor at your sixth form or college has to be present to give guidance (such as lectures, tutorials etc.) towards your award.
AS-Level Design & Technology – Textiles
- AQA AS-Level Design & Technology – Textiles
In the first unit, Materials, Components and Application you will be able to work with a variety of textile materials to allow you to understand their properties, characteristics, cost and availability. You will also learn about textile manufacturing and design processes. In Learning Through Designing and Making you will be able to put your knowledge and skills into practice by designing and making your own project.
- University of Cambridge International Examinations AS-Level Design & Textiles
In the Fibres and Fabrics unit, you will learn about the characteristics and use of fibres and fabrics in a number of different contexts. In the Design unit, you will explore contemporary, historical and multicultural designs and processes. You will learn about design principles such as aesthetics, as well as clothing manufacturing processes.
A2-Level Design & Technology – Textiles
The A2 Design & Technology – Textiles is the equivalent of the second year of study of A-Level Design & Technology – Textiles. This is not a separate award. The A2 –Level Design & Technology – Textiles with the AS-Level Design & Technology – Textiles makes up the A-Level Design & Technology – Textiles. The A2-Level Design & Technology – Textiles will further develop your knowledge from AS-Level Design & Technology – Textiles.
- AQA A2 Design & Technology – Textiles
In Design and Manufacture you will focus on materials, design, market influences, processes and manufacture. In the Design and Making Practice unit, you will design, make and evaluate your own textile project.
- University of Cambridge International Examinations A2 Design & Textiles
You will learn about textile applications including fitness for purpose, creative techniques, designing to specifications, application of colour, yarns and environmental issues. You will also develop an understanding of textile technologies, including textile design and development.

Students who study A-Level Design and Technology – Textiles have the opportunity to study a variety of courses at university, such as Fashion Design, Contemporary Surface Design, Textile Engineering, Textile Technology, Textile Science and Technology and many other courses. There is also a variety of roles available within the textiles industries, such as Technologists, as well as in Quality Control.
