A-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

A-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

By choosing to study A Level Design & Technology or any of the available routes, you will develop a broad view of design and technology. You will also develop your ability to design, make and evaluate products as well as being able to appreciate design, materials, manufacture and marketing and the links between these.

A-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

A specific arrangement of units is required for certification, made up of two AS-Level units and two A2 level units. You will study four units and the assessment for A-Level Design & Technology – Product Design is by portfolio and exam.

Over the course, you will undergo at least 360 guided learning hours over a two-year period. These guided learning hours are levels set by the government on how much time the tutor at your sixth form or college has to be present to give guidance (such as lectures, tutorials etc.) towards your award.

AS-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

  • AQA AS-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

In the first unit, Materials, Components and Application you will learn about the properties of a wide range of materials and components, how products are designed, ergonomics, health and safety and consumer safety. In the Learning Through Designing and Making unit, you will design and make your own project.

  • Edexcel AS-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

In the Portfolio of Creative Skills unit, you will create a portfolio that will include a product investigation, a product design and a product manufacture, that complies with either resistant materials technology or a graphic product. In the Design and Technology in Practice, you will learn about materials and processes used in both design and technology. You will also develop an understanding of commercial and industrial practices, quality control and health and safety.

  • OCR AS-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

In Advanced Innovation Challenge, you will be able to design and model a product, as well as reflecting on your design concept. In the Product Study unit, you will carry out product analysis, development and prototype modelling and testing.

A2-Level Design & Technology – Product Design

The A2 Design & Technology – Product Design is the equivalent of the second year of study of A-Level Design & Technology – Product Design. This is not a separate award. The A2 –Level Design & Technology – Product Design with the AS-Level Design & Technology – Product Design makes up the A-Level Design & Technology – Product Design.  The A2-Level Design & Technology – Product Design will further develop your knowledge from AS-Level Design & Technology – Product Design.

  • AQA A2 Design & Technology – Product Design

In Design and Manufacture, you will further develop your knowledge and understanding of materials and components, design, market influences, processes and manufacture. In Design and Making Practice, you will carry out a product design project of your own choosing.

  • Edexcel A2 Design & Technology – Product Design

In Designing for the Future, you will develop your understanding of modern design and manufacturing practices as well as contemporary design issues. You will also focus on ICT and systems in design and technology as well as the impact of design activities on the environment. In the Commercial Design unit, you will design, produce and evaluate a product that has a real commercial use.

  • OCR A2 Design & Technology – Product Design

In the Design, Make and Evaluate unit, you will produce a portfolio around the design, making and evaluation of a product. In Product Design, you will focus on materials, components and their uses, manufacturing processes and industrial and commercial practices.
