A-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

A-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

By choosing to study A-Level Design & Technology or any of the available routes, you will develop a broad view of design and technology. You will also develop your ability to design, make and evaluate products as well as being able to appreciate design, materials, manufacture and marketing. In this award, you will focus on the quality of food, its processing packaging and labelling, nutritional values and health and safety.

A-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

A specific arrangement of units is required for certification, made up of two AS-Level units and two A2 level units. You will study four units and the assessment for A-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology is by portfolio and exam.

Over the course, you will undergo at least 360 guided learning hours over a two-year period. These guided learning hours are levels set by the government on how much time the tutor at your sixth form or college has to be present to give guidance (such as lectures, tutorials etc.) towards your award.

AS-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

  • AQA AS-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

In the first unit, Materials, Components and Application you will learn about the properties of a wide range of ingredients and components, how products are designed, food safety, health and safety, quality and food labelling. In Learning Through Designing and Making, you will design and make your own project.

  • Edexcel AS-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

In the first unit, Portfolio of Creative Skills you will create a portfolio that will include a product investigation, a product design and a product manufacture. In the Design and Technology in practice, you will learn about materials, components, additives and processes used in both the design and production of food products. You will also learn about the nature and properties of main food components and quality control and good manufacturing practice.

A2-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology

The A2 Design & Technology – Food Technology is the equivalent of the second year of study of A-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology. This is not a separate award. The A2 –Level Design & Technology – Food Technology with the AS-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology makes up the A-Level Design & Technology.  The A2-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology will further develop your knowledge from AS-Level Design & Technology – Food Technology.

  • AQA A2 Design & Technology – Food Technology

In Design and Manufacture, you will focus on applying food science and nutritional principles, issues that affect the design of new products and a variety of processes such as preservation methods. In Design and Making Practice, you will carry out a Food Technology project.

  • Edexcel A2 Design & Technology – Food Technology

In Food Products, Nutrition and Product Development, you will learn about food commodities, nutrition, product development and innovation. In the Commercial Design unit, you will be able to apply your knowledge and skills to design, make and evaluate a food product of your own choice that will have a commercial use.
